Xbox 360 Girls - The Secret Society of Xbox 360 Women
There is a secret society living amongst the general population. These individuals are known as "gamers." They thrive on the thrill of the controller grasped firmly in hand.
With lightening-quick speed they can hit a dizzying combination of buttons marked with circles, squares, triangles and letters. They play a variety of games until their thumb becomes numb and a crick develops in their neck from the weird angle at which they view the television screen.
To them, the release date of the new Xbox 360 was a day to be marked on every calendar and circled in red. Who are these secret Xbox 360 fanatics? Are they teenage and twenty-something men? No, they are not. They are the legions of female gamers out in the gaming world. They are different ages, races and come from different backgrounds.
Welcome to the Xbox 360 Girls - The Xbox 360 Women
Being a woman gamer comes as a shock to many typical Xbox users. The very idea of a woman becoming excited at the mere mention of the new Xbox 360 is sometimes greeted with a raised eyebrow. It is not that a woman cannot be a 360 user; it is more a skepticism over the expected games she will play.
Solitaire is accepted, as are some of the more "fluff" games. Games such as football, golf or fighting games are generally not thought to be something a woman gamer would enjoy. There is not anything that limits women to games like "The Sims." The Xbox 360 is the top-of-the-line gaming machine. Women want it just as much as their male gaming counterparts and not for just playing cards.
Games such as "Need for Speed Most Wanted" or "Final Fantasy XI" are being played by more women than you might think. They crave the thrill of victory as their car speeds through the checkered flag on racing games. Adrenalin rushes are not reserved for the men; women want to feel the satisfaction of winning just as much.
There may never be equal marketing within the gaming world because the major demographic is still predominantly male, but manufacturers such as Microsoft are realizing that women are legitimate gamers.
The Xbox 360 system and games take into consideration the women playing, just as much as they do the men. Sleek lines, neutral colors, female characters and non-gender-biased ad campaigns are just a few of the marketing strategies.
There will always be games that appeal more to the male gamer with scantily clad women and muscular men spiking footballs, but that is not to say that some women do not enjoy these games equally. Regardless of the game being played, both sexes can be found purchasing and playing them. Before long, women everywhere will stand up and announce, "I am a gamer and I am proud."
